Buying fruit in person is easy. You pick it up, feel the weight, smell the stem end, and put back anything that gives too easily.
Online you have none of that. You are working from a photograph and a short description, and the fruit turns up already chosen. So the skill shifts: instead of judging the fruit, you judge the listing and the seller.
Here is what actually tells you something.
1. Read the origin before the price
Country of origin is the single most useful piece of information on a fruit listing, and a lot of sites leave it out.
It tells you three things at once. It tells you roughly how far the fruit travelled and therefore how it was shipped. It tells you which growing season you are buying into. And it sets your expectation on flavour, because the same fruit from two countries is genuinely two different eating experiences.
Kent mangoes from Peru are firm, large and mildly sweet. Anwar Ratol from Pakistan is small, soft and intensely perfumed. Both are excellent mangoes. If you order one expecting the other, you will be disappointed by a perfectly good fruit.
The same holds outside mangoes. Strawberries from Spain and strawberries from South Africa arrive at different times of year with different acidity. Cucumber grown in the UAE was picked days closer to you than anything imported.
If a listing does not name an origin, that is worth noticing.
2. Check the pack size, not just the number
The most common online fruit-buying mistake is ordering by price and discovering you bought a wholesale box.
Fruit is sold in wildly different units. Blueberries come in a 125g punnet. Litchi comes in a 2kg box. Valencia oranges come in a 5kg box. A 5kg box of oranges is a good buy if you juice every morning and a problem if you do not.
Divide the price by the weight before you compare anything. A cheap-looking listing is often a small pack, and an expensive-looking one is often a case at a good rate per kilo.
3. Match the fruit to the season
Almost anything is available in Dubai year-round, but availability and quality are not the same thing.
Subcontinental mangoes run roughly May to August. Sindhri opens the Pakistani season, Chaunsa and Anwar Ratol follow, and Langda closes it out. On the Indian side, Alphonso peaks early and Kesar runs later.
Outside that window, Kent from Peru, Palmar from Brazil and R2E2 from Australia fill the gap on the southern hemisphere’s calendar.
Jamun and falsa are short summer windows. Figs, persimmon and pomegranate are autumn fruit. Buying in season means better fruit at a better price, and it usually means the fruit travelled less far to reach you.
4. Judge the seller by how the delicate items are handled
The strongest signal about an online fruit seller is not their apples. It is their raspberries.
Hardy fruit survives almost any handling. Raspberries, blackberries, red currants, figs and physalis do not. They need cold storage on arrival, cold storage in the van, and packing that keeps weight off them.
If a seller stocks the delicate lines and they arrive intact, their cold chain works. If they only stock hardy fruit, you have learned nothing about them — and you have fewer options.
The same test applies to peeled and prepared fruit. Peeled durian and peeled jackfruit are unforgiving. A seller who handles them confidently is handling everything else properly too.
5. Confirm the delivery detail before you check out
Before your first order, know four things:
- Which emirates the seller covers
- The daily order cut-off for delivery
- The delivery fee and minimum order value
- What happens if something arrives damaged
That last one matters more with fruit than with any other category. Fresh produce is variable and a bad box is not always anyone’s fault. What separates a good supplier from a bad one is whether they fix it without an argument.
6. Buy small once, then buy properly
With a new supplier, place a small mixed order first. Include one hardy item, one delicate item and one thing you know well enough to judge — a fruit you have eaten a hundred times and can assess without thinking.
If all three arrive right, order at the scale you actually want.
A short checklist
Before you confirm any online fruit order:
- Is the country of origin listed?
- Is the pack size stated in grams or kilos?
- Is this fruit in season right now?
- Does the price per kilo make sense against the alternatives?
- Do you know the delivery fee, the cut-off and the returns process?
- Does the seller stock delicate lines, not just hardy ones?
Five of those six are answered on the listing page. If they are not, the listing is telling you something.
